Chicago needs another Cuban sammie spot like the world needs another love song. These days there seems to be one on every corner hawking pressed water bread pork, ham and swiss cheese filled cubanos and sweet caramelized plantains. That being said, most of these new spots aren't very good; 90 Miles Cuban is one of the best.
Their cubano features a nice slather of tangy pickles, zingy mustard, oozy cheese, and garlicky pork and their toothsome plantains are never greasy. Fried yucca, which can be gluey and overcooked, is firm, sweet and doused with a vampire's death portion of garlic here. An unusual addition the otherwise Cuban menu is a Puerto Rican style Jibarito – aka the Guajarito sandwich – featuring juicy steak, romaine, tomato, caramelized onion and Swiss cheese sandwiched between two deep-fried crispy green plantains.
You'll enjoy these tasty treats in a cozy counter-top style dining room outfitted with Cuban travel posters, pre-Fidel newspaper clippings, a mountain of yellow Café Bustelo coffee cans and a handful of autographed photos of celebrities – including the ravishing Eva Mendes.
